The toughest athletics discipline is finally getting a face and a voice: the Belgian Walking Association is launching its inspiring sports website !
When speaking about athletics, people mainly think of sprint numbers or running events such as the 800m, 1500m or 5000m on the track, and the marathon. But race walking is also an athletic discipline that pushes the human body to its limits.
Yet, this sport often remains under the radar in Belgium. With the launch of its new platform, the Belgian Walking Association aims to change that. The goal is to give this spectacular sport the visibility it deserves.
Race walking is an Olympic discipline with a rich history. Nowadays, it is often overlooked by the media and not always taken seriously. This is unjustified as the performances are extraordinary. For both the Olympic distances (20 km & 50 km) and the extreme distances over 200 km, athletes must combine iron discipline with impressive endurance.
According to John Nunn, a former athlete from the USA, the 50 km race walk is the most grueling event at the Games. And this statement might well be true.
The 50 km race walk is a true test for the endurance of the human body. Many race walkers who reach the finish line collapse almost immediately and receive some form of medical assistance.
This distance is widely considered as one of the most legendary and grueling events in Olympic history.
