At the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games, Christoph Höhne won the first gold medal in athletics for the GDR, when participating for the first time at the Games with a separate team.
In previous Games, the GDR participated, together with the Federal Republic of Germany, as a united German team.
In Mexico 1968, both Germanys still carried the flag and the national anthem of the united German team.
"By winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games, I gained fame in the GDR but also outside it and I am proud of that", said Höhne to the press agency on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
Sports photography
After his sports career, Höhne specialized in sports photography and worked for the newspapers 'Junge Welt' and 'Deutsches Sportecho'.
At the International Press Photo exhibition in Barcelona 1978, he won the 1st price for the best black-and-white photo.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, he became an independent entrepreneur, specializing in sports photography.
