Giuseppe Malaspina: Italian national champion 50 km Race walk in 1941 with a time of 4 h 42' 41"
Awarded to the prestigious << Honour of Knight of the Republic of Italy >> by the former president Sandro Pertini for exceptional sports merits

His biography

Giuseppe Malaspina, born in Genoa on May 28, 1910, began his athletics career during his military service in 1930.

In 1931, he became military champion in race walking at the Italian Army. This victory was the beginning of a brilliant career in race walking, a discipline of athletics.

Giuseppe Malaspina gained national fame and popularity by winning numerous titles at the Italian National Championships, where he was particularly outstanding in the middle distance over 50 km.
Giuseppe  was selected to represent Italy at the 1940 Tokyo Olympics. He was among Italy's strongest race walkers of the 1930s and would have competed, but the Games were canceled due to the outbreak of World War II.

The year 1941 was the best year in his sports career by obtaining the title of Italian champion 50 km and, of course, by his marvellous victory in the race << Padua – Monselice 50 km >>, crowned with an honourable 2nd place on the World ranking 50 km Race walk with a time of 4 h 30'. Hats off, Mr. Malaspina !

After the difficult war years, he won, despite a long-term ankle injury, still several titles in the national championships.
In the Olympic year 1948, he could not convince the selectors of his ability and was therefore not selected because young athletes were preferred.

After ending his sports career, he remained active in the athletics world. Through his work as a trainer, he came into contact with the iconic race walker Abdon Pamich from Fiume, the historical Italian name for the city, now known as Rijeka, Croatia.

He passed away in Genoa on March 28, 1982, at the age of 72. His memory lives on !
